Azeroth looks familiar, but this is not simply the original game with a fresh coat of paint. World of Warcraft: Forever revisits the level 1-60 world with new adventures, new race-and-class combinations, updated systems, and more ways to decide how your game looks and feels.
If you are logging in for the first time, returning after years away, or moving over from another version of WoW, the most useful first step is not downloading a perfect build. It is deciding what kind of adventure you want to have.
Here are nine choices worth understanding before you commit to your first character.
1. Choose a playstyle before you choose a class
There are nine playable classes in WoW: Forever: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior. The right starting point is your preferred role, not a tier list built around an early balance patch.
- Want to protect your group? Start by exploring Warrior, Paladin, or Druid.
- Want to heal allies? Read about Priest, Paladin, Shaman, or Druid.
- Prefer ranged spellcasting? Compare Mage, Warlock, Priest, and Shaman.
- Prefer physical damage, stealth, or a pet companion? Look at Rogue, Hunter, and the relevant Warrior or Druid options.
Those are playstyle suggestions, not claims about which specialization is strongest. Talent and ability details can change as Forever develops.
Explore all nine class guides: AzerDex Class Guides & Talent Calculator. You can inspect the three talent trees for each class and experiment with a build before you spend a single point in-game.
2. Check the new race-and-class combinations
Some class choices that were impossible in original WoW are available in Forever. The six notable additions for existing races are:
- Alliance: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest.
- Horde: Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin.
That means your old assumptions about which race can play which class may be out of date. If you have a particular character fantasy in mind, check the actual race page instead of relying on memories of vanilla WoW.
Compare your options: AzerDex Race Guides & Racial Abilities. Each race page links to compatible classes and documents the sources behind its racial abilities.
For an illustrated overview of all six additions, see our new race-and-class combinations guide.
3. The Skyborne have two different faction paths
The new Skyborne race starts on Zephras Isle, a level 1-12 starting area. Your faction choice changes the Skyborne identity and one of its class options:
- Alliance: High Order Skyborne can play Druid, Hunter, Mage, Rogue, and Warrior.
- Horde: Windshaper Skyborne can play Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, and Warrior.
A Skyborne Mage is an Alliance option; a Skyborne Shaman is a Horde option. Both factions have access to the four shared classes.
Important access note: Blizzard states that access to the Skyborne race and its Zephras Isle starting experience requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade. Blizzard has not said whether characters of other races can visit the island, so this guide makes no claims about travelling there. Check your edition before planning a Skyborne character.

4. Classic and Enhanced are presentation presets, not different games
On your first login, Forever asks you to choose a Classic or Enhanced experience preset before you pick a ruleset or create a character. The preset sets your starting interface and visual options; it is not a different game.
- Classic starts with standard-definition character models and the classic screen UI layout. Quest points of interest and objective blobs, one-bag inventory, and transmog start turned off.
- Enhanced starts with high-definition character models, quest points of interest and objective blobs, one-bag inventory, and transmog turned on, with the centralized screen UI layout.
Blizzard describes the preset as a convenient starting point rather than a lock on your choices: you can change individual settings later under Game Menu > Options.
5. Level 60 is the destination, but the world is the point
Forever builds on Azeroth's original level 1-60 foundation. Blizzard has announced new and expanded areas, including Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, the Riverglades, and Zephras Isle, plus more than 1,000 new quests across the leveling experience.
That is a reason to slow down when you encounter an unfamiliar road or quest chain. Your first character can be an exploration character rather than a race to the level cap.
A practical approach: keep an eye on nearby quests and travel routes, revisit towns for class training, and leave room for the parts of the world you have never seen before.
6. New dungeons appear throughout the journey
Blizzard has announced nine new five-player dungeons spanning roughly levels 13-60, alongside the original-world experience. These are not all endgame activities: some are meant to be discovered while you level.
If you enjoy group content, choose a role you want to practice early and make time for dungeons as you travel. A group-focused player may value a flexible class; a mostly solo player may prefer a different rhythm.
Specific level recommendations, rewards, and strategies should be checked against live-game information rather than copied from older versions of WoW.
7. Learn what the Legacy System actually does
Forever introduces a Legacy System. According to Blizzard, Legacy points are Battle.net account-wide and available to all of your non-Hardcore characters, and each character spends them separately in three areas: Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness.
Blizzard has also said that leveling alternate characters is not required to benefit from the system, and that all character advantages can be unlocked on a single character. You can invest in one favorite character and still take part.
Before chasing a min-max route, read the in-game explanation of the Legacy choices available to your character and decide which activities matter to you. Exact point costs and totals are not covered here because they may change.
8. Your character has a two-part name
Forever uses a main name plus a secondary name. Blizzard's starter guide says the complete combination must be unique within your region, so uniqueness applies to the two parts together rather than to each part separately.
Think of a name you will still like when other players see it in a party or guild roster, and check the in-game naming rules before you commit.
9. Use a simple plan for your first session
You do not need a spreadsheet to enjoy the first evening. Make these five decisions and then go play:
- Pick a role. Damage, healing, tanking, or a class that can explore several roles?
- Confirm your race/class pairing. Use the updated Forever options, not a vanilla-era chart.
- Check Skyborne access if relevant. Avoid building your entire plan around content your edition cannot access.
- Set your interface preset. Choose what feels comfortable; refine it later.
- Bookmark your class guide. The AzerDex Talent Calculator is useful for experimenting as new talent points become available.
The best first character is one you want to keep playing when the novelty wears off. A good plan gets you into Azeroth; it should not turn the first night into homework.
Quick questions
Is WoW: Forever just another Classic season?
No. Blizzard's own words are that Forever is "not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic." It builds on the original level 1-60 world and adds new areas, quests, dungeons and systems.
Can I change from Classic to Enhanced visuals later?
Yes. The presets only set your starting defaults, and individual settings can be changed later under Game Menu > Options.
Do I have to level multiple characters for Legacy progression?
No. Blizzard says leveling alternate characters is not required to benefit from the Legacy System.
Can both factions play Skyborne Mages and Shamans?
No. High Order (Alliance) Skyborne can play Mage; Windshaper (Horde) Skyborne can play Shaman.
